5. Mia - Keep Calm & Carry On

How does the amount of preparation change the way a birth unfolds?
Mia, who gave birth to three children is the living example of the importance of preparation. Each of her babies came at a different time of her life. She prepared her first birth by the book, with all tools in hand and all the time in the world to prepare as much as she possibly could. On the other hand, her second baby came at a time when life was much busier, she not only had less time to prepare, but she was also experiencing emotional and physical exhaustion, combined with morning sickness. She had a difficult time keeping calm and let panic submerge her -- and that second birth didn’t happen the way she hoped for. For her third baby, she knew she was going to aim for a VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarian), and prepared as much as she could. But it was in an anxiety fueled context -- the COVID pandemic -- that she experienced her last pregnancy and on top of that, she struggled with depression.

Surrounded by her family and friends, in spite of the challenges she had to overcome, she brought each of her children to the world in an environment filled with love and kindness. It is that love that carries her and gives her the strength to keep calm. Mia shares her three birth stories with a lot of compassion for herself, self-awareness and gratitude. Her calmness is contagious and we all wished we were as cool and composed as her!
