DNA backlog testing challenge in SA

DNA backlog testing continues to be a challenge in South Africa. In this podcast DJ Complexion and Mpho Mashita talk to the Spokesperson for Dr. Rinee Pretorius Spokesperson for Action Society, a lobby group and civil rights organization that has been at the forefront of demanding transparency and progress in reducing DNA backlog testing.

Backlog in DNA testing has a direct impact on the entire criminal justice value chain, which includes shortage of buccal kits at police stations and this leads to a backlog in criminal cases which require DNA testing i.e. GBV violence cases. April of the very same year, SAPS released a statement saying that great strides have been made to overcome the backlog in DNA testing.

SAPS has come out to say that the system to track and trace forensic exhibits was now fully up and running and that since it went live in April, about 10 million samples from the Forensic Laboratory Admin System have been loaded.
