South Africa’s employment crisis continues. The latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey Q4:2021 by Stats SA shows another increase in the official unemployment rate which now stands at 35.3% - the highest since the start of the QLFS in 2008.

• 35.3% is South Africa’s official unemployment rate expanded 46.2%
• The official unemployment rate for youth aged 15-34 is 49.0% (60.4% expanded)
• The unemployment rate for youth aged 15–24 is 66.5% (expanded 77%)

During his state of the nation address, President Cyril Ramaphosa stressed that the state of the economy and the 11 million citizens who did not have jobs were among the country’s biggest challenges. In a follow-up press conference, he said the unemployment crisis gave him sleepless nights.
Youth unemployment remains the biggest crisis of our times. Three out of four young people between the ages of 15 -24 are not employed.
