Onion and tomato prices up 110% in five years!

South African consumers are paying R2,279 more for food than they did in 2019. An average food basket cost R3,051 five years ago. The same basket costs R5,330 now. The price of onions, tomatoes, apples and samp skyrocketed by between 110 and 190 per cent. Mervyn Abrahams, who is a researcher at the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group, has been speaking to Newswatch's Tamasha Khanyi about what led to these increases...
