Eskom has launched a nationwide campaign aimed at empowering households to claim their right to cleaner, affordable, and sustainable electricity through Small-Scale Embedded Generation (SSEG) systems—most commonly solar PV installations.
The campaign supports residents in Eskom-supplied areas by helping them comply with the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) regulations, which require all solar system owners under 100kVA to register their systems. For areas supplied by municipalities, registration is done through the local authority.
This initiative reflects every South African's right to access safe and sustainable energy, aligning with Section 24 of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to an environment that is not harmful to health and well-being.
Free Registration and Savings: A Boost for Energy Justice
In a progressive move that lowers the barrier for families seeking energy independence, Eskom has waived all registration and meter installation fees for residential PV systems up to 50kVA since March 2023—and will continue to do so until March 2026.
