The Gauteng City-Region Observatory (GCRO) has opened entries for a new writing competition titled “Unseen and Understudied: The Coloured Community in Post-Apartheid Gauteng.” The initiative aims to amplify voices and stories from within the Coloured community, a group that continues to face barriers to full social and economic inclusion.
Organised in partnership with the University of Johannesburg, the University of the Witwatersrand, the Gauteng Provincial Government, and the SA Local Government Association (Gauteng), the competition invites submissions in the form of essays, poems, personal reflections, or short stories — limited to 800 words per entry.
Writers are encouraged to explore themes such as history, identity, language, race, religion, politics, location, and social issues. Entries close on 29 August 2025, with winners announced by 31 October 2025. Prizes include R2 000 for first place, R1 500 for second, R1 000 for third, and R500 for selected entries featured in the final publication.
By creating this platform, GCRO hopes to preserve, celebrate, and interrogate the diverse experiences of the Coloured community in Gauteng, ensuring their stories are recorded and recognised.
