The Department of Social Development hosted an Educational Awareness Programme on the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse on Saturday, 27 September 2025 in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, Eastern Cape. The initiative was held in response to alarming child protection trends, with 2 884 cases of abuse reported in the province during the 2024/25 financial year, including 917 cases of sexual abuse, 230 of physical abuse, and 866 instances of neglect. Teenage pregnancy rates also remained a serious concern, with 94 children aged 10–14 and over 12 000 adolescents aged 15–19 falling pregnant during the same period.
