GUEST – Mangaliso Nxasana – Manager: Actuarial Umbrella Fund Solutions at Liberty

Liberty Corporate Benefits has published its first report on the impact of South Africa’s Two-Pot Retirement System, Relief Today, Preservation Tomorrow, one year after implementation. The report shows that the system has delivered immediate financial relief for members while strengthening long-term preservation. By mid-2025, millions of South Africans had accessed funds to manage pressing financial needs, with withdrawals largely used for debt repayment, household essentials, and vehicle deposits.

At the same time, the preservation component of the system has driven a sharp increase in members keeping retirement savings intact. Liberty notes that digital channels, particularly WhatsApp, have been crucial in ensuring fast, secure access for members, while the system’s success going forward will depend on education, transparent fees, and employer support.
