The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) in the Northern Cape strongly condemns the senseless and brutal attack on a female police officer who was assaulted while performing her lawful duties. This deplorable act is not only an attack on an individual, but also a direct assault on the rule of law and the broader efforts to ensure the safety and security of our communities.
We view such incidents with the utmost seriousness, as they represent a growing threat to those who dedicate their lives to public service. It is unacceptable that law enforcement officers, and particularly women in uniform, continue to face violence and hostility while carrying out their work to protect society. The union calls on the South African Police Service (SAPS) management to ensure that the matter is thoroughly investigated and that the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.
This attack underscores the urgent need to strengthen safety measures for officers in the line of duty. We further call on the SAPS to provide the affected officer with full psychological and medical support as she recovers from this traumatic incident. No member of the police service should feel unsafe or unprotected while serving the nation.
We reiterate our long-standing position that an injury to one officer is an injury to all. We continue to urge government to take decisive steps to protect those at the frontline of law enforcement through improved working conditions, proper resourcing, and the implementation of effective protection mechanisms.
