According to a report, Tshwane spends about R 450 million per year on water-tanker services to fill the gap caused by infrastructure breakdown.
The municipality’s own documentation shows that from July 2024 to December 2024, the expenditure on water tankers reached approximately R 332.3 million just for six months.
The opposition has criticised a recent adjustment budget in which Tshwane increased its water-tanker allocation by over R 240 million, while water-infrastructure capital works remain back-burnered.
Commentators and political parties have flagged the over-reliance on tankers as a symbol of service-delivery failure and possible mis-management of public funds.
