Soweto Matric Rewrite Centre Fails Pupils - and Their Dreams

Heartbreak and anger in Soweto after nearly 200 matric rewrite students discovered days before exams, that they weren’t registered to write. The Kavod Institute of Excellence, also known as Black Tutoring Services, had allegedly taken monthly fees from parents since February, promising learners a chance to upgrade their marks. Instead, they’ve been told they’ll have to wait until May 2026 to try again. Furious parents protested outside the Meadowlands-based centre, accusing its managers of fraud and deceit. The Gauteng Education Department has since confirmed the school isn’t registered. The department says affected learners can still apply at legitimate exam centres before March 15 next year - urging them to act fast. Phemelo speaks to Gauteng Education spokesperson, Steve Mabona.
