IN CONVERSATION WITH Cllr Marika Kruger Muller

There are growing concerns about pollution in Tshwane’s
Blinkblaarspruit, a key water system that flows through areas such as
Zambezi Country Estate, Bergvallei Nature Reserve, and the
Doornpoort Spruit, before feeding into the Bon Accord Dam.

09:35

Residents and environmental groups have raised alarms over effluent
reportedly entering the stormwater channels — contamination believed
to come from a nearby business. The City’s Environmental
Management Department has already identified the source, and
according to the Democratic Alliance (DA), a directive under the
National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) has been issued to
ensure accountability and remediation.

However, questions remain about how soon corrective action will take
place, and whether the City’s environmental enforcement capacity is
strong enough to prevent similar pollution incidents in future.

We’ll look at what went wrong, how the City is responding, and what
measures are being put in place to safeguard residents’ health and
Tshwane’s natural water systems.
