Caitlin Wheeler is a PhD candidate in Human
Genetics at the University of the Witwatersrand, conducting
her doctoral research in partnership with the CSIR’s
Bioengineering and Integrated Genomics Group and the Wits
Donald Gordon Medical Research Institute. Her work focuses
on developing single-cell reference maps to better
understand autoimmune hepatitis in patients from South
Africa.
She holds an MSc (Med) in Genomic Medicine from the
University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), where she
investigated the impact of CYP3A5 genotypes on tacrolimus
pharmacokinetics in paediatric liver transplant patients. Caitlin
has gained international experience through the Novartis
Next Generation Scientist Program in Basel, Switzerland, and
has received extensive training in single-cell transcriptomics
