As we continue celebrating Africa Month, Continental Update turns its focus to the stories, histories, and cultural legacies that shape who we are as a continent.
In this special episode, we spotlight the urgent and inspiring work being done to preserve and protect Africa’s cultural and natural heritage for future generations. Earlier this month, the African World Heritage Fund marked African World Heritage Day while also celebrating 20 years of impact across the continent, bringing together leaders, partners, and stakeholders committed to advancing Africa’s heritage agenda.
We are joined by Dr. Albino Jopela, Mozambican-born heritage scholar and committed Pan-Africanist, and the Executive Director of the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF). Since taking on this strategic leadership role in 2023, Dr. Jopela has overseen the only UNESCO Category 2 Centre in Africa dedicated to supporting the implementation of the World Heritage Convention across the continent.
In this conversation, he unpacks the importance of heritage preservation, Africa’s representation on the global stage, and why safeguarding our history is essential to the continent’s future development and identity. Under his leadership, the AWHF has strengthened its impact through capacity-building, policy advocacy, and sustainable heritage financing positioning heritage not only as a cultural responsibility, but as a powerful driver of sustainable development, social cohesion, and climate resilience across Africa.
Join us as we explore how protecting the past helps shape a stronger, more connected future for Africa.
