Should Employees Have to Pay for a Sick Note?

On Skebenga Tuesday, a listener from Pinetown has sparked a debate after sharing their workplace dilemma. Following a discussion on Carol Ofori's show about Germany's new sick leave rules, the anonymous caller revealed that their company introduced a strict policy requiring a doctor's note even for just one day of sick leave because of repeated abuse of the system by employees.
When they recently came down with a severe stomach bug, they felt too ill to leave home and refused to spend hundreds of rand on a doctor's consultation simply to obtain a sick note for a single day's absence. Instead, they argued that if the company insists on medical proof for one day of sick leave, then the company should cover the cost.
The big question , is Anonymous a Skebenga for refusing to pay for a doctor’s note, or is her company taking things too far?
