Breast Cancer Awareness – Free Screenings, Early Detection, and How You Can Help

In this episode of Community Matters on Radio Cape Pulpit, host Jean Morris speaks with Philippa Berkman from I Love Boobies about breast cancer awareness, the importance of early detection, and the work being done to provide free breast health screenings to women in underserved communities.
Philippa explains that I Love Boobies reaches women who face barriers to healthcare – whether locational (rural or remote areas), social (stigma and fear), or financial (unable to afford screenings). They partner with employers and communities to bring nurses and privacy gazebos directly to women, offering clinical examinations, education on self-exams, and referrals for free mammograms and biopsies through radiology partners.
She highlights the alarming statistics: 47,000 South African women should be diagnosed with breast cancer annually, but only about 10,000 are – meaning over 37,000 women are missed. While South Africa has a 40% survival rate, countries with early detection programs have survival rates as high as 90%.
