IN CONVERSATION WITH JOY MOKGATA- WOMEN'S RIGHT ACTIVIST

Loading player...
As thousands of young women pursue their academic journeys at universities and colleges across South Africa, the issue of safety on campus and in surrounding residences has become a pressing concern. For many, leaving home to study represents independence and opportunity, but it also exposes them to risks such as harassment, assault, and unsafe environments. Ensuring their safety is not just about protecting individuals, it is about safeguarding the future of a generation determined to achieve their goals.
Campus safety is directly linked to academic success. When students feel unsafe in their residences or while commuting, their ability to focus on studies is compromised. Fear and trauma can derail progress, leading to absenteeism, poor performance, or even dropping out. Creating secure spaces through better lighting, reliable transport, vigilant campus security, and strong community awareness ensures that young women can thrive academically without the constant shadow of danger.
