A new generation of South African photographers is being given a platform to examine questions of identity, memory, place and belonging through New Storytellers: Trajectories of Belonging, a group exhibition bringing together the work of 26 young creators.
The exhibition forms part of the National Legacy Project, a three-year initiative led by the Market Photo Workshop in collaboration with the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie (ENSP) in Arles, France. It is curated by Dr Sergio Valenzuela-Escobedo, an artist, researcher and curator whose work has included photography, editorial practice and international cultural projects.
The exhibition opens on Saturday, 29 August 2026, from 11:00 to 14:00, at the Photo Workshop Gallery and Gallery 1989 in Newtown, Johannesburg. The opening programme will include a conversation between Dr Valenzuela-Escobedo, Ezona Njokweni and Ntandoyenkosi Maseko.
