Rather than simply meeting immediate needs, U-Turn is focused on helping people experiencing homelessness rebuild their dignity, rediscover their purpose and ultimately move towards independence. Erman and Liesel unpack U-Turn’s step-by-step programme — from providing access to meals, showers and safe sleeping spaces through a voucher-based system, to addiction recovery, work-readiness training and eventual employment.
They also share the powerful story of a man who entered the programme after finding himself homeless and was eventually able to reconnect with his family, return home and step back into his role as a husband and father.
After more than 107,000 meals served over 19 months, U-Turn is now looking ahead to the next phase: expanding its social enterprises, creating more work-readiness opportunities and developing additional U-Turn ecosystems across Pretoria North, Pretoria East, Pretoria West and other parts of the capital city.
It’s a conversation about dignity, restoration, faith and what can happen when a community comes together to give people more than temporary relief — but a genuine pathway out of homelessness.
