World Mental Health Day: Suicide’s Ripple Effect

Today is World Mental Health Day and new South African research is shining a light on the people we often forget when we talk about suicide — those left in its wake.

Early findings from a Wits University-led international study suggest almost nine out of ten South African respondents have, at some point in their lives, been exposed to someone else’s suicidal thoughts or behaviour.

But among those who didn't receive mental healthcare afterwards, almost 6 in 10 say they would have wanted support.

Researchers say it points to a largely hidden mental-health burden — because suicidal distress doesn't only affect the person experiencing it.
