South Africa’s ID Management System to promote inclusivity

Loading player...
Currently there is discrimination against the trans gender community when it comes to South Africa’s ID Management System… and that is about to change due to the proposal to recognize other sex/gender categories in the Identity Management Policy.

As things stand, both the Identification and Births and Deaths Registration Act do not cater for children who are born intersex. Meaning that these children are assigned either a male or female sex status at birth. Another issue is that the identity number recognizes and accommodates only two categories, namely, male and female and does not differentiate between the distinct concepts of sex and gender. To remedy this, the draft policy proposes that the population register must make a provision that enables the establishment of a category that is neither male nor female.
