The OFM Business Hour’s Olebogeng Motse talks to Nthabiseng Methola about the Cheetah Route, one of five Free State routes that are named after popular South African animals and birds, offering a range of attractions that will make your holiday memorable…

The Cheetah Route, home to Bloemfontein, Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu, is filled with historical, cultural and natural attractions that will keep travellers occupied for days.

Both the ANC and the Lord of the Rings author, JRR Tolkien, were born in Bloemfontein. The city is known as the provincial and the legislative national capital.

While in the city, visit the Free State National Botanical Garden, which has 400 species of plants, 144 bird species, 54 reptile species and 32 mammal species. Visitors can have a picnic or admire the lush views.

Other places to add to your Cheetah Route itinerary include Franklin Nature Reserve on Naval Hill, which is the only nature reserve in South Africa that is in the middle of a city. Also on Naval Hill is the second tallest statue of Nelson Mandela, and the Planetarium, which is the first digital planetarium in Africa, south of the Sahara.

Discover the Free State is made possible by the Free State Gambling, Liquor and Tourism Authority.
