Flipping Johannesburg: How Steve Baron Turned Renovation Chaos into Creative Gold

Some people renovate houses. Steve Baron somehow renovates your day. His YouTube channel Flipping Johannesburg has become one of my absolute favourites, and this week on Good Things with Brent Lindeque, I get to chat to the man behind it all.

Steve left his career as a chartered accountant in 2022 to pursue something more creative and fulfilling: flipping houses. What began as a lockdown passion project has grown into a channel South Africans can’t stop watching.

“During lockdown I decided to open up to my more creative side… I put together a proper portfolio and made short videos offering advice and tips,” he says.

Since then, his videos have exploded... one has passed 3 million views, thanks to a mix of real-life renovation, dry humour, chaos and brilliant design. It’s Grand Designs with a proudly Joburg twist.

In this episode, Steve and I chat about where it all started, how he manages projects and the unexpected side of YouTube fame: being recognised in public. He also shares some renovation tips and, completely unrelated, we discover what “clapping” and “clocking it” mean to Gen Z.

More than DIY, Steve has built a community of dreamers, doers and creators. His story is a reminder that starting something new can change far more than just a home... it can change your whole life.

A truly uplifting chat. Enjoy!
