Unpacking the first G20 Summit held on African soil

South Africa recently made history by being the first African country to host the G20 Leadership Summit. While global leaders gathered in Johannesburg for high-level bilateral talks, communities across the country were asking a crucial question: How do these big-picture conversations translate into the daily bread and butter issues we face at local level? At the same time, civil society organisations hosted the People’s Summit – a parallel platform where the realities of rural and working-class communities were brought to the fore. Kara Mackay from the Women on Farms Project, one of the organisations that travelled to Johannesburg to ensure that the voices of farmwomen and rural communities were heard, shares her key takeaways of this year's G20. She unpacks what came out of the People’s Summit, how it connects to the G20 agenda, and what it all means for ordinary rural communities in the Drakenstein.
