The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is hoping to add a significant number of new voters to the roll during the final voter registration weekend this weekend.

There are currently 25.6 million registered voters in South Africa.

The Commission's Mosotho Moepya says the first registration weekend in March saw over three million people visiting voting stations to either register for the first time, re-register or update their details.

A total of 22 617 voting stations will be open countrywide between 8am and 5pm on Saturday and Sunday. Local government elections will be held on 3 August.
