NW: Social media foils armed robbery

Rustenburg - A 41-year-old man is expected to appear in the Bafokeng Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after the police in Rustenburg foiled an armed robbery attempt thanks to the use of social media. Police spokesperson, Adele Myburgh, says members of the flying squad received a tipoff about a suspicious white Mercedes Benz. She says the police traced the rented vehicle within half an hour at the Ziniaville taxi rank, near Tlhabane. Myburgh says the driver of the car, who was trying to evade police, was found in possession of a number of illegal items including a firearm and police appointment certificate. - Mark Steenbok
